What is a Create & Make?

A Create & Make is a bookable creative space for patrons to use to learn new skills, make special crafts, or just enjoy a hobby away from home! Some library systems call them Makerspaces, Fab Labs, or Studios. CPPL currently has two Create & Make locations: Central Library and DeQuincy Library. Equipment and activities offered were chosen based on responses to a patron survey in 2023. They are listed below with links for more information and details.

Overview of Use Policy:

Key parts of the Use Policy are listed below, but patrons are responsible for reading the full Policy Guidelines before booking.

  • Individuals must be at least 18 years old.
  • Bookings are allowed up to 24 hours in advance. Individuals needing same-day bookings must contact the branch directly.
  • Cancelations must be made at least 2 hours in advance.
  • Beyond the equipment, the Library has limited supplies available. These are primarily for testing and training. The user is responsible for bringing materials for the project.
  • Please list as many details as possible about your planned project and any materials you will be bringing when completing the booking form.
  • The Library welcomes individuals who wish to learn new skills for career and entrepreneurial endeavors; however, neither the machines nor provided tools should be used as the primary equipment for a business.
  • Individuals wishing to use the laser cutter and engraver at Central must complete the safety course first.
  • Booking lengths are available in the following intervals: 30 minutes, 1 hour, 1.5 hours, and 2 hours.
  • To optimize equitable time and access for all users, the booking limits listed below will be applied. While they are listed for different intervals, the software will impose the strictest limit.
    • 1 per day
    • 2 per week
    • 6 per month
    • 26 per year

Please Note:

Staff instruction and guidance is primarily for operational and troubleshooting purposes. They will demonstrate machine or software use and explain what supplies and tools are available. For more specialized skills, such as project design or painting, they will provide suggested resources for self-instruction. Staff is unable to offer full one-on-one courses for certain activities. If needed, please contact the branch for any questions on what assistance can be provided for a specific activity.
