Winter counts are Lakota calendars traditionally made by drawing pictographs of the most important event of the year on a buffalo, or similar, hide. Virgil Wounded Horse’s winter count has been riddled with sorrow for most of his life. After dealing with tremendous losses early in his youth and bullied for being only half Lakota, Virgil decided to distance himself from Lakota traditions and the reservation. However, he is not able to separate himself from the many hardships his community faces.

Maximilien Robespierre was the central figure of the Reign of Terror. A period of the French Revolution in which the enemies of the French Republic were tried and executed by guillotine. Paradoxically, this same Robespierre was also called "The Incorruptible" for his almost monomaniacal devotion to liberty and Reason. He was an advocate against war and, even in private, despised the death penalty.

Even terrible people can fall in love. 

At least, that's what the cursed version of Prince Charming seems to think in the YA Fantasy Violet Made of Thorns by Gina Chen. There's a prophecy by a dying witch that suggests the Prince will be destroyed-- unless he gets married. And the Prince resents the push to hurry up and find a bride.
